In January, Stonepeak Co-President Jack Howell sat down with Bloomberg to discuss a wide range of topics, including the evolution and appeal of infrastructure as an asset class, today’s competitive infrastructure landscape, and where we’re seeing the most compelling investment opportunities in 2025.

The opportunity in infrastructure today is almost always associated with AI and digital infrastructure – a sector which Stonepeak was early to invest in, dating back to the firm’s first fund. “A lot of folks didn’t touch digital back in the day,” Jack said. “A lot of folks said, well, that’s not infrastructure. Infrastructure’s really energy and transportation.” Stonepeak made its first digital infrastructure investment in 2014 into a wireless communications business called Vertical Bridge, and its first data center investment in 2017 with the acquisition of North American data center platform Cologix.

Speaking about the broader infrastructure opportunity and ongoing expansion of the asset class, he continued, “Increased data demand, energy demand and the energy transition, realignment of supply chains on the transport side—those are very large problems that require large amounts of capital…It’s incumbent on folks like us to go find that next horizon.”
